Seriously, what is up with Singapore schools? We have these really stupid rules that we have to adhere to.
Firstly, the school uniform. We do NOT like wearing school uniforms. Why? We prefer to dress up in our own style which will make us feel more comfortable...DUHR! Why school uniforms? If the skirt is too long, we have to alter it...If it's too short then we have to buy a new skirt. Plus, the uniform sometimes do not really have our correct size. Some people don't look good in school uniforms okay? My school skirt is with (pleats?) and it makes me look fat at first. Wait, who says all girls like to wear skirts? We have to put on a pair of shorts beneath the skirt so that we will not accidently give a free show for those who are looking. Maybe girls would like to put on shorts or jeans now and then? And maybe some boys would like to wear skirts? I don't know.
Secondly, there are these rules about hair, shoes, socks, blouses and shirts etc. Besides wearing the school prescribed uniform, we students must be further pushed under by the SCHOOL RULES AND REGULATIONS. Our hair MUST be black no questions asked. Our shoes must be either PURE BLACK or PURE WHITE. Socks must be ABOVE THE ANKLE. Blouses and shirts MUST BE TUCKED IN. Oh, hair accessories MUST BE BLACK OR MAROON (school colour). We CANNOT wear stuff like rings, bracelets, necklaces etc. Thankfully some teachers "close one eye" over these things but some do not. There is another rule which I almost forgot to mention. SPECTACLES CANNOT BE COLOURFUL. What is this? I bought a pair of lime green spectacles...I don't know if I had mentioned this before... Anyways, the teachers (PLURAL TERM SOMEMORE) told me that it was too fancy. Come on lah! The frame is just GREEN. It is not fancy! The frame design is plain and simple. Thus, I had to fork out another hundred plus dollars for a pair of school approved type glasses. Hey, it's not cheap okay! (By the way, the reason for not allowing me to wear the glasses to school is- "It may distract other students in class when the teachers are conducting lessons." Pu-lease!!! People so free, stare at other peoples' specs meh?)
I don't understand why we even have these things in school. Why must we don school uniforms? It's so boring. The other rules too. We must the shoes be like that? Why can't be dye our hair? Girls must tie up hair if it's too long. Do the rules help us score distinction in every subject? Will it help us concentrate? I don't think so. The teachers do not have to follow the school rules. They can dye their hair and wear fancy clothing. Where is our freedom of expression? We can't even grow up with creativity and style. Our teenage years will just go zipping by in school uniform. No wonder they say Singaporeans are less creative.
Last note: School rules do NOT affect our grades in any way. They will NOT make our performance in studies better. In fact, I think school rules will make our grades WORSE. Students cannot study if they do not like being in a constricted environment. Hence, they will not be able to study effectively.
That's all for my ranting. I really really hope that MOE will conduct a survey in all schools. Although I don't really think that they will bother about our views, feedback and opinions.
